there is is a big mess in downtown oakland after protestors targeted institutions from banks to city hall. tara moriarty is live in downtown oakland covering the effort to repair vandalized buildings. >> reporter: some of the windows that protestors smashed have been boarded up but others have not. there is a gaping hole here in the front glass doors to city hall. there is a security guard here keeping watch. demonstrators threw paint balls and smashed windows not only at city hall but the oakland tribune office, the berkeley national lab office and three banks. the group of 200 people gathered at frank ogawa plaza last night at 6:00 and timed the rally to coincide with the 11th anniversary of the start of the u.s. war in afghanistan. around 7:15 the group headed north of west grand avenue and circled back to city hall that is when the violence broke out. two luxury cars were vandalized. protestors are taking their anger out on the wrong people. >> we work hard for our money. >> we are arch people and that is sending the wrong message. >> reporter: the march lasted only for 40 minutes and polic
are going to visit the city. ktvu channel 2 reporter alex savidge has more on the big changes transit agencies are making to accommodate the crowds. first let's check in with tara moriarty who is is in the city with a look at what the city is doing to prepare for the streets that will be jammed. >> reporter: we are here along the embarcadero. this is where the official store for the america's cup is. there are going to be quarter finals today and then more racing this weekend. expected to draw 40,000 people to the bay. it's one of many events happening this weekend. every member of the police force will be out. this will be closing -- they will be closing one northbound lane along the embarcadero between the ferry building and bay street to allow emergency vehicles access. city leaders say it's a practice run for the big america's cup event next year where more than three million people are expected to attend. also on tap the u.s. navy blue angels will be flying overhead. they will be practicing today. you might catch a glimpse. their shows will be on saturday and sunday of course. no

developing news out of union city where a fire at a strip mall damaged several businesses. claudine wong is live to see why the fire burned and a look at the damage. claudine. >> reporter: good morning, mike. let me show you what is happening now. in the last half hour the ladder truck moved into position. they are still putting water over the top of this. they are doing that because the roof has collapsed in that area and beyond so they are worried there may be hot spots. we've seen it smoking all morning long. they want to put more water on it and they will wait awhile before they go actually inside. now we don't know at this point how the fire started but we do know that it burned for quite awhile. we will give you a look at the flames. at its height, this fire was really going. smoke first spotted at 1:15 this morning. the firefighters say it was burning for quite awhile before anyone saw it. it was in the roof line of that strip mall. when firefighters got on scene they realized how much progress that fire was making. it took 90 minutes to get in front of it. the focus will be on th
time sheriff ross mirkarimi and his wife eliana lopez was here at city hall was when they decided to oust sheriff ross mirkarimi and that recommendation was presented to the board. mayor ed lee suspended him without pay after he pled guilty. it stemmed from an incident with his wife who suffered a bruised arm as a result. it is one of city's more liberal supervisors and some say they want him out. they say it is simply a conflict of the interest. the mayor said that public officials need to be held to a higher standard. now the mayor, may have his own problems to deal with. they say ed lee purge engineered him is -- purge jordan perjuried himself and they say he is seeking his removal. they say it is all a politically charged witch hunt and meanwhile they will take nine of the -- it would take nine of the 11 board of supervisors to remove sheriff ross mirkarimi from office. tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 morning news. >>> president barack obama is waking up and we will show you a picture south of market where the president spent the night. traffic around the hotel is restricted rig
. occupy protestors threatened to reoccupy the area around city hall. brian flores is in oakland with the rally marking the first anniversary of the big police raid. >> reporter: good morning. first off stark contrast in what we saw last year at occupy oakland in terms of last night. there are still reminders of what happened last night. there are still signs. there is some graffiti on sidewalks and walls. we talked about some businesses yesterday that took some precautions before the march. you can see the chase bank behind me still has boarded up windows. as we roll the video of what happened last night. about 175 protestors gathered peacefully starting yesterday afternoon and into the evening. there was a vigil and martha went from city hall 20 lake merit to china town and back to the plaza. there was a large police presence here last night. one protestor tossed a rock that hit an officer in the chest. that officer was not hurt and a second person was arrested for about instructing an -- obstructing an officer in a narcotics possession. there was a call from occupy oakland as
